A Champion Has Fallen…

George Michael Steinbrenner III

July 4, 1930 – July 13, 2010

A sad day in the Yankees Universe.  My deepest sympathy condolences to the Steinbrenner Family, the Yankees Organization and Yankees fans everywhere.  Our world will never be the same.  It was only fitting that George departed as the World Series champion.  He is and always will be a champion to us.  George, thank you for being you…

I only saw George Steinbrenner in person one time (at Mickey Mantle’s funeral), but he had a deep and lasting impression on my life.  He is perhaps the only owner of any sports team that I’ve ever followed that wanted to win more than I did.  As a fan, what more could you want in an owner.  I can’t say that I agreed with every move, but I can say that the Yankees are who they are because of George.  He restored honor and prestige to a downtrodden franchise and restored the team to the standards of its rich legacy and storied past.

Somewhere in the corner of Heaven, Billy Martin can be heard…”But George!”…

The cosmos will explode!! Billy and George are together again!! As a Red Sox fan of “a certain age” I lived through all the antics of Mr. Steinbrenner – the good and the bad. But today is truly the end of an era in baseball. And baseball as a whole has to mourn. My Red Sox would not be the team they are today with George….he inspired all to be better. My condolences to you Scott, Mr. Steinbrenner’s family and the Yankee family.

Scott,
I was remarking in anotherpost that Goerge Steinbrenner might be in a fight with St. Peter right now complaining that his wings can not be fitted with pinstripes.
A true American icon has passed, and I am saddened to know I will never see him light up that Rays suite again in Tropicana Field.
I have known Steinbrenner and consider him a true baseball friend. Both through my job and my love of the Rays I have gotten toknow him. I feel like a better person to have known him….even for a brief time.

Wait….you were at Mickey Mantle’s funeral???????? Someday you’ll have to do a post about what that was like! Yes, very sad day for us all. But as you said, how fortunate that he was able to see his team win last year.
