FORMER YANKEES PRESIDENT PASSES AWAY
Former Yankees president Lou Saban died Sunday at his home in North Myrtle Beach, SC. He was 87.
Saban is perhaps best known as the head coach of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, where he coached O.J. Simpson. Lou was also coach of the Bills when they won the 1964 and 1965 American Football League (AFL) Championships (the last two years prior to the start of the Super Bowl, which began in 1966). The AFL titles were the only championships in Bills history.
Saban was also the first head coach of the Boston Patriots, who began play in 1960 when the AFL was formed (thanks for that information, Julia!).
In 1955, George Steinbrenner served on Saban’s coaching staff at Northwestern University (as receivers coach).
“He has been my friend and mentor for over 50 years, and one of the people who helped shape my life,” Steinbrenner said in a statement. “Lou was tough and disciplined, and he earned all the respect and recognition that came his way. He spent a lifetime leading, teaching and inspiring, and took great satisfaction in making the lives around him better. This is a tremendous loss to me personally.”
Saban worked for George Steinbrenner as Yankees president in 1981 and 1982.
I like this Saban quote: “You can get it done. You can get it done. What’s more, ya GOTTA get it done!”.
Saban was definitely one of a kind…

It just shows once again what a small world the sports arena really is. I find it fascinating that his only non-football job appears to be with the Yankees. Like the picture you chose.

SHORTPORCH – I think if the right trade opportunity comes along, there’s a good chance that Melky would be shipped out. Removing him from the roster would open up more opportunities for Nick Swisher. But if Brian Cashman doesn’t find something he feels is of equal value, he’ll hang on to Melky.

Julia’s right. I’m sure Gardner would be banished to Kansas City or someplace like that. I doubt the BoSox would agree to a trade that might help out their enemy. Maybe if you got Theo Epstein drunk enough…So what’s going to happen to Melky Cabrera now? Do you think the Yanks will trade him? It might be a good idea to hang onto him for a little while, in case Gardner doesn’t work out or somebody gets injured or something. I think Melky will be insurance for now. But the Yanks do have a glut of OF-ers, and somebody could be on his way out. But in the meantime, I’m excited for Gardner. I love watching him play.
